During my time in Belize this summer, I went with a group from Ocean Springs, MS to the new King's Home to see how construction was going and to meet with Leonie (founder and director of the home). Leonie sat down with the group to talk, and we asked her what the remaining needs were to finish the home (which may happen as early as December of this year!). While she listed the needs, I experienced a nudge from God. Leonie said that the home still needed bunk beds for the rooms, and I thought God said, "You build these." Now... I don't hear from God very often (almost never), and my spiritual ears are not very good. As a rule, I mistrust these kinds of nudges, but the idea stuck with me. Eventually, I began to give it serious consideration. What followed was a lesson in how to hear God's voice and gradual confirmation of my ability to hear. For the rest of the summer, I looked for Belizean furniture shops to make the beds. I figured that God would not want me to build bunk beds when we can pay Belizeans to do it. In every instance, I was either unimpressed by the quality of the bed or disappointed with the high price. I found one group that made beautiful, sturdy bunk beds. But to buy the beds from them would have cost around $15,000US. We can't afford that. I came home thinking about why I thought God had told me to build the beds and looking for confirmation. So here's what God did within two weeks of my return: A local construction company donated around $3000 worth of lumber for us to build the beds with. TWAW gave me time to design and build a bed--which we got approved by the Leonie at the King's Home. And local volunteers have stepped up to help build the beds--not just a few folks, but lots of people. The pieces of the puzzle fell into place, and God helped me understand why he wanted me to do this project. Our first workday to begin building was this past Saturday. We should have the beds built by November to go on a shipping container we're sending at the beginning of December. I tell this story because it illustrates one of TWAW's favorite verses. Ephesians 2:10, "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them." God knew what he had in mind when he nudged me that day in Belize. He knew where the wood was going to come from and that this project would give volunteers in Amarillo a way to be involved in Belize. And He was gracious to allow me to doubt my ability to hear his voice--gently leading me toward his plan. And in the end, I get to do the fun work, along with a group of volunteers, and the kids at the King's Home get beds to sleep in! And most importantly, God gets the glory because the whole thing was his idea, and he is making it happen. Has God been speaking to you? Are you listening? Is there anything he's told you to do that you've forgotten about or blown off? Did God speak to you while you were in Belize this summer? Follow through! What God has prepared for you to do is designed for your (and others) eventual peace and joy! Don't miss out!
