The Belize Central Prison
The Kolbe Foundation, a non-governmental, non-profit Christian organization, is managing the prison system for the country of Belize.
A great work of ministry is taking place at the Belize Central Prison. Since August 2002 the only prison in Belize came under the management of a Christian non-profit foundation and is gaining worldwide recognition for its life-changing impact. Inmates are presented with the Gospel, biblical teaching and counseling, as well as training and education to prepare them for re-entry into society.
In fact, one inmate (Santiago Baeza, who runs the in-house Christian radio station) is currently attending the Belize Presbyterian Seminary!
Once an institution of torture and inhumane conditions, this prison has been transformed into a place of healing and redemption. With a new building underway, John Woods, Chairman of the Kolbe Foundation continues to focus on alleviating overcrowding allowing them to better focus on ministry to the inmates.
Kolbe has set out to add a new dimension to the prison by creating a learning institution behind the fence. In recent months new teachers have joined the staff. Now instead of a few prisoners passing local exams, they're gearing up for a dramatic increase in the number of students learning life skills so they can reintegrate successfully into society.
TWAW provides almost all of the medicine for the prison with deliveries on a monthly basis for people who wouldn't get it otherwise. All medicine is purchased through a program run by MAP International (www.map.org) where for $400 you can purchase a "Travel Pack" with approximately $20,000 worth of medicine.
