Kenny Apprentice Program
Our staff person in Belize, Kenny Logan, is a gift to us from God. His talents and passions are many, one of which is a desire to rescue young men and boys that are high risk for getting involved in gangs and other criminal activity.
God has given Kenny a vision to develop a kind of boys ranch to be able to get youth off the streets, teach them about Christ and living for Him, and to train them with vocational skills to be able to support themselves.
In the meantime we have our Kenny Apprentice Program. When Kenny spots a young man with potential he encourages them to come alongside him and work with him. This allows Kenny to give onsite training and spiritual mentoring at the same time.
This summer he began to focus on a young teenager named Ezekiel who lives at the King's Children's Home. Kenny has an extra burden for kids, like Ezekiel, growing up without a father or family. Orphanages and children's homes are forced to release these boys and girls when they turn 18, whether they are "ready" or not.
Ezekiel got to work with our mission teams this summer building houses for the poor in the Valley of Peace and also working on the Christian school in the same area. He is developing building skills, life skills, and received his "first ever paycheck"!
There are now signs indicating that the fulfillment of Kenny's dream may not be far off. We recently began working with a vocational training school near Ladyville for underprivileged youth called Tubal Trade and Vocational School. There are not enough high schools in Belize to accommodate all who would like to attend. To qualify a student must achieve a high score on a national exam. Those who do not score high on the exam do not get any education beyond the eighth grade, which means their options for the future become limited. Several Christian groups have formed these vocational schools to introduce young people to Christ and to give them hope for a better future through education and vocational training.
Tubal is one of these schools. Kenny met with them and proposed a program for their 2nd year construction students to work with TWAW and our mission teams on building projects we already have around the country (schools, homes for the poor, churches). This would provide real hands on experience and onsite training for these students in their final year before starting their future careers, as well as, teach them to give back to their community. Also, it gives Kenny and our team members the opportunity to share the love of Christ with these kids while working side by side with them. The administration at Tubal excitedly accepted the proposal and would like to get started as soon as possible! Please pray with us for the development and implementation of this program.
A Picture of Health!
The mobilization of Belizean volunteers is a growing trend within our ministry. Initially our teams were groups of volunteers exclusively from the US. We strove to blend those teams working side-by-side with Belizean volunteers. But now, more and more we are finding that we have the opportunity to mobilize Belizean volunteers into mission teams for doing Kingdom work.
